Gerilim romanlarından çok hoşlanmasam da akademide geçen romanları çok seviyorum. The Maidens çok vahşet içermeyen, Yunan trajedileri ve hikayeyi dozunda birbirine bağlayan bir kitap.
The Maidens, hem konusu hem kapağı hem de yazarın ilk kitabıyla kazandığı popülarite dolayısıyla ilgimi çekti. Dediğim gibi zaten Cambridge Üniversitesi’nde geçtiğinden okuyabileceğimi düşünüyordum ama işin içine sanat, edebiyat ve Yunan tragedyaları ve karizmatik akademisyenler girince hemen okumaya başladım. Okuması hayli rahat, insanı merakta bırakan bir kitap bu. Dolayısıyla hemen bitiveriyor. Ancak janr meraklısı olmayan ben bile kitaptaki bazı şeyleri çok saçma ve ucuz buldum. Gerçek janr meraklılarının yazarı ciddiye alabileceğini pek düşünmüyorum.
Bu demek olmuyor ki kitap kötüydü. Kanımca tam bir plaj kitabıydı, bazı karakterler de hiç fena değildi. Mariana Londra’da grup terapisti olarak çalışan ancak bir yandan da kocasının ölümünün hüznüyle uğraşan bir kadındır. Cambridge’de okuyan yeğeni Zoe onu aradığında Zoe’nin sesinden bir şeylerin ters gittiğini hemen anlar. Zoe’nin en yakın arkadaşı korkunç bir şekilde öldürülmüştür. Cambridge mezunu olan Mariana düşünmeden hemen öksüz olan yeğeni Zoe’nin yanına gider. Alex Michaelides
Alex Michaelides (born 1977) is a bestselling British-Cypriot author and screenwriter. His debut novel, the psychological thriller The Silent Patient, is a New York Times and Sunday Times bestseller, with over a million copies sold.
Michaelides was born in Cyprus to a Greek father and English mother. He studied English literature at Trinity College, Cambridge University. He studied psychotherapy for three years, and worked for two years at a secure unit for young adults. This work provided material and inspiration for his debut novel The Silent Patient.
Michaelides’ debut novel, The Silent Patient, was the #1 New York Times Bestseller of Hardcover Fiction in its first week and was the bestselling hardback debut in the US for 2019.
